Understanding Stress in the Body and How Reflexology Helps

Stress is something we all experience at some point in our lives. It can stem from work, family life, relationships, finances, health concerns, or simply just trying to keep on top of everything you have going on. Sometimes it shows up in response to a specific event, and sometimes it builds gradually and over time. So much so that we might not even realise how much stress we've been under until our body begins to speak up.

Many people think of stress as something that occurs purely in the mind, but stress is a whole-body experience. It affects the nervous system, hormones, sleep, digestion, energy levels and emotional wellbeing. This is often why people can feel stressed even when they are trying their best to cope. Understanding how stress shows up in the body can be incredibly helpful, especially when it comes to then figuring out and finding ways to minimise it and support yourself.

What happens in the body when we feel stressed?

When the brain senses stress, whether that stress is physical, emotional or psychological, it signals the body to go into a protective state. This is often known as the fight or flight response. In short bursts, this response can be useful. It helps us react quickly, stay alert and be proactive in dealing with immediate challenges. But the problem comes when stress becomes more of a constant, and the body does not get enough opportunity to calm down and switch out of that state.

When this happens, stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline can start to become, and even stay, elevated for longer than they are meant to. Over time, this can begin to impact different systems throughout the body and start to take a toll on your entire wellbeing.

If stress is showing up regularly, you might notice things such as:

  • difficulty sleeping or switching off
  • feeling tired but wired
  • tension in the neck, shoulders or jaw
  • regular headaches and/or migraines
  • digestive discomfort or bloating
  • feeling irritable or emotional
  • low mood or anxiety
  • brain fog or poor concentration
  • changes in appetite
  • feeling overwhelmed by things that would normally feel manageable

Please know that these are not signs that your body is failing. They are purely signs that your body is trying to protect you while carrying more than it can comfortably hold. This would be the time for you to hold an intervention and try to eliminate the factors causing your stress through therapies, holistic and calming treatments, among other daily habits and rituals you can try.

How reflexology can help with stress

Reflexology is a gentle therapy that works on specific reflex points of the feet, which correspond with different organs, glands and systems of the body. One of the reasons reflexology can feel so beneficial during stressful periods is that it encourages the body to move into a calmer state. The treatment itself creates space to slow down, breathe more deeply and step out of the constant demands of daily life.

During a session, many clients notice:

  • deeper relaxation
  • a quieter mind
  • softened physical tension
  • a sense of emotional release
  • feeling lighter afterwards
  • improved sleep
  • a greater sense of balance in the days that follow

While every person is different, reflexology is often valued because it supports the body rather than forcing it.

Supporting the nervous system

In the treatment room, I often explain that the body responds beautifully when it feels safe, calm and supported. When stress levels are high, the nervous system can remain stuck in alert mode. Reflexology helps create the conditions for the body to move into rest and repair mode instead. This is the state where healing, digestion, hormone regulation and quality sleep are better supported.

For many people, the hour treatment with ABWR is not simply about their feet. It is one of the few moments in the month when nothing is being asked of them, and that alone can be incredibly powerful. It's a time for you to let go of any stress and allow us to fully take care of you.

Stress is rarely caused by one thing, and it is rarely resolved overnight. This is why regular wellbeing practices can be so valuable. Reflexology works beautifully as part of an ongoing rhythm of care, rather than waiting until you feel completely depleted. Monthly treatments can offer:

  • a calming pause in a busy life
  • ongoing nervous system support
  • better stress management over time
  • a chance to notice early signs of overwhelm
  • space to reconnect with yourself

Gentle ways to support stress alongside reflexology

Reflexology can be a wonderful tool to support you in combating your stress. However, it's not the only tool, and there are plenty of additional ways you can incorporate into your daily life, such as:

  • getting outside for fresh air and daylight
  • eating regular, nourishing meals
  • reducing screentime before bed
  • gentle movement such as walking or stretching
  • taking small pauses throughout the day
  • asking for support when you need it

Stress is part of being human, but living in a constant state of stress should not be the norm. If you're experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned at the beginning, this could be your body trying to communicate with you. And now might be the time to listen. Reflexology offers a calm and nurturing space to begin listening again, and we'd love to welcome you to AB Wellness and Reflexology here in Chapelton, Aberdeenshire.
